Area 7 Conference – Teacher Resource Notes
I had an awesome time at the Area 7 TCEA Conference in White Oak. Below is a list of the websites and tools that I discussed in my session entitled “Free Tools for Today’s Teacher”. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or comments.
The List (http://fur.ly/xbv)
- Fur.ly – A URL shortener that can shorten a list of URL’s instead of just one.
- Geogebra -Free mathematics software for learning and teaching
- CanvasMOL – A molecule visulizer with simple compounds, crystals, and carbons. See these molecules in 3D detail!
- PeriodicVideos – A periodic table with clickable links. Opening the link will popup a video about that element. Very useful for teachers that want their students to explore the elements.
- TubeChop – allows you to easily chop a funny or interesting section from any YouTube video and share it.
- Viddler – YouTube like service that allows you to upload and share videos. I like it because it does not have the 10 minute limit that YouTube enforces. The max file size is 500 MB at Viddler.
- xTimeline – Easily create and share timelines with pictures and videos. Also see Timetoast.
- Aviary – A suite of online content creation tools. I could do an entire session on Aviary. It has tools that include image editing, vector creation, audio editing, screen capture, and image effect editing. Really cool stuff!
- Federal Resources for Educational Excellence – An exhaustive list of free resources for teachers that the governement has so kindly compiled. They do a pretty good job of cleaning the list to eliminate dead links and only include stuff that would be useful to teachers.
- Spreeder – A free online speedreading app that allows users to become faster readers and improve comprehension. The first time I tried this site, I couldn’t believe how fast I was reading, but it really works.
- TokBox – Video chat with up to 20 people for free!
- Tooble – Download YouTube videos to you computer. This is a program that you install. Mac and Windows.
- DocCop – Checks papers for plagiarism by searching popular sites for key phrases and words. It works really well. Similar to Turnitin.com but free.
- JohnLocker – A large collection of documentary films on pretty much any subject that would be important to teachers. They call themselves “The Online Learning Network”.
- The FreeSound Project – A large database of free sounds that are licensed for creative commons. Great for moviemaker projects where you need sound effects and folley.
- CoolToolsforSchools – A wiki setup to be a repository of great tools for teachers. Some are free and some are not. Great site!

I love it!
