TCEA 2011: Wednesday

Hey Folks!  I have had a great day at the TCEA convention.  This morning started with the General Session with Leigh Anne Tuohy, the mom from “The Blind Side”.  Having seen the movie, then seeing her in person makes me realize how good of a job that Sandra Bullock did of portraying this person.  Its almost like you took the demeanor of Sandra Bullock in the movie, and changed the face.  This lady was very outspoken and very opinionated.  The room was packed with everyone wanting to see what she had to say.  One thing that I didnt like was when she said:  ”You can still teach without all of this tech stuff if you have too”.  She is right, but I dont think I would want to.  Below is a video of a similar speech that she did.  TCEA has not posted the video from this morning, but if they do, I will let you know.

Sessions:

I have been to a few sessions today and so far there is a few central themes.  A few things I have noticed:

  • Everyone has an iPad.  I have never been a proponent of the iPad, so I have a one-sided perspective; but its the new fad. The iPad is like the “Pokemon” of my generation.
  • Its no longer “bring your laptop”, its “bring your device”.  The information can flow to any device, not just laptops.  I have been using my cell phone for the majority of the time that I have been here.
  • Web 2.0 tools are hot!  I have seen more and more things that I have never heard of.  You can see some of those tools below.
  • Student use of personally owned devices.  More and more schools are allowing and encouraging students to bring their own devices on campus.  This includes cell phones, laptops, slates, and idevices.

Here are a few of the Web 2.0 tools that have seen so far:

  • myfakewall.com
  • corkboard.me
  • quiqr.it
  • citrify.com
  • glogster.com
  • google.com/squared
  • voki.com
  • twiddla.com
  • openclipart.org

These are just a few of what I have seen.  I will be posting more later!
