45 Free Web, iOS, and Android Apps at #TCEA2012

Im excited to be presenting a session this year on Web, iOS, and Android Apps.  I was attempting to find apps that will work on most devices, and Im pretty happy with the results.  The list still contains quite a few (19) iOS only apps, but the rest cover all devices.  I hope you enjoy the session and I hope to do it again next year.  See you at #tcea2013!  Be sure to follow me @stuartburt.

Web Apps

  1. Soapbox – Similar to socrative.  Participants can answer poll questions, and ask questions of their own.
  2. Cel.ly – Group Texting.  Setup your classes to send reminders, and have group conversations
  3. TodaysMeet - Backchannel chatroom – Teachers can setup a chatroom on the fly with a unique URL and it automatically expires.  Students can visit with their mobile device and laptop
  4. Socrative – Student Response system using texting.  Teachers setup quizzes and questions.  The students responses are recorded.
  5. Qwiki – Type in any subject and this programs makes a video about that topic.
  6. ifttt.com – Hook services together and automate what happens!  Hard to explain but awesome concept!

Android Apps

  1. Physics Gizmo – Science experiments on your handheld device!
  2. Algeo – Graphing Calculator
  3. Physics Equations – This app helps physics students determine which equations they will need to solve a problem.  It doesn’t solve the problem, but assists in getting started.
  4. CamScanner – Scan Documents with your smartphone
  5. EasyBib – Scan barcodes of books and produce a bibliography
  6. FactBook – Free access to the CIA Factbook
  7. GeoQuiz – Take quizzes about Geography
  8. Prey – Security for your devices.  Also for your laptop!

Web, iOS, and Android Apps

  1. StudyBlue – Online flashcards with photos, videos, and personalized quizzes
  2. Conduit Mobile – Create an app for your school, class, club, or business!
  3. Google Voice – Get a separate phone number for your classroom
  4. Skitch – iPad and Mac Screen Annotation
  5. Edmodo – A classroom community with apps to manage and participate!
  6. EasyBib – Scan a book or enter it online and produce a Workscited in MLA
  7. myHomework – A student can setup their class calendars, homework assignments, and other important dates.
  8. Historypin – Pin your history! Use this site/app to share a glimpse of your past.

iOS Apps

  1. Genius Scan – Scan pictures of documents and send them to students – also on Windows Phone
  2. Whiteboard Lite – Collaborative Drawing with multiple iPads.
  3. Jot! Whiteboard Free – Fun, Fast, and Simple Whiteboards with easy sharing.
  4. Sundry Notes – Create notes with text, graphics, and sounds.  Users can connect via wifi and collaborate on notes
  5. OverDrive – Checkout Library Books and Audiobooks from any public library that uses the service.  Free!
  6. Free Graphing Symbolic Calculator – Enter a large variety of functions and it will graph it for you.  Export the graphs to the photo library or email them from your iPhone/iPad.
  7. 3D Brain – A interactive brain with descriptions of the 29 different sections and their purpose.
  8. Molecules – 3-D renderings of molecules.  Molecules come from an online database and can be downloaded to your device.
  9. The Presidency – Easy access to historical data about the 44 presidents
  10. ShowMe – Turn your iPad into an interactive whiteboard.
  11. Flipboard – Personalized magazine in a cool “flip” style
  12. Idea Sketch – Mind Mapping
  13. History:Maps of the World – High Resolution maps of the world.  Other apps include Maps of the US, Maps of Asia, etc
  14. MindSnacks –  Apps for learning foreign languages.  Android App on the Way!

  16. Toontastic – Creative learning tools that empowers kids to draw, animate, and share

  18. Action Movie FX – Add special effects to your movies!
  19. VidRhythm – Make music by verbalizing beats and sounds.

  1. SyncSpace Shared Whiteboard – Also on iPad
  2. Sight Words – Sight word flash cards.  Record your own voice.
  3. Congress – Quick access to information about Congress and its members

Bonus Apps (Some apps that didnt make the above list, but are still great!)

  1. Temple Run – A game, but with a unique way to use in education
  2. Chrome Sync – Sync your Chrome bookmarks to your iPad and iPhone
  3. LogMeIn – Remote access to yours and others computers.  Companion iPad app.
  4. Minecraft – Basic block building game.  Very addictive.
